Kellogg’s announced a breakfast cereal recall Friday after receiving complaints about sickening smells and flavors that caused vomiting and diarrhea. Breakfast cereals marketed to children totaling about 28 million boxes were recalled voluntarily by the Kellogg Company.

28 million boxes in Kellogg’s recall
The Kellogg's recall involves about 28 million boxes of Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks. The Associated Press reports that after a “waxy” smell and flavor made people ill the company volunteered to take the cereals off the market. J. Adaire Putnam, a Kellogg’s spokesperson, said the business received about 20 complaints, of which five included vomiting and diarrhea.
Kellogg’s buys Smart Choice label for Froot Loops
Foodpolitics.com reports that 3 grams of fiber was added to Froot Loops so the American Society of Nutrition (ACN) would authorize the cereal to bear the Intelligent Choices label. It’s reported that ACN collects $100,000 from Kellogg’s and other companies to authorize the Smart Choices seal on cereal products. As a wise nutritional choice, Froot Loops contain no fruit, are 41 percent sugar by weight, deliver 44 percent of the calories with sugar and are made with trans fat, a substance proven to increase the risk of coronary heart disease.

Speaking about the Kellogg's recall to the Wall Street Journal, Putnam said the sickening smells and flavors were coming from plastic bags in the cereal boxes containing the cereal. In late March after the bags hit the market, complaints started to mount. A spokesman for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the company initiated the recall and notified the agency.

Consumers can contact Kellogg at 888-810-4163 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time to learn more about the recall or get a refund. Products marked with the letters "KN" following the "better if used before" date notice were affected, the company said.
